French government to face no-confidence vote

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier is set to face a no-confidence vote on Wednesday, triggered after he bypassed parliamentary approval to push through a controversial social security budget.

Opposition parties from both the left and far-right, including Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), have pledged to oust Barnier’s minority government and appear to have the numbers to succeed.

Speaking to French media on Tuesday, Barnier acknowledged the stakes, warning that the vote could lead to “serious and difficult consequences in economic and social terms.”
