Education Minister Evarist Bartolo this evening said the government was completely withdrawing the controversial amendments to the Education Act, which have led the Malta Union of Teachers to declare a strike for Monday.
The announcement was made at a press conference on Friday evening, with the minister saying that this was a “final appeal” to the teachers’ union.

Earlier, the MUT said the strike would be held as planned after a last-ditch conciliation meeting failed. The MUT walked out of talks after Prime Minister Muscat said the government was ready to withdraw the amendments to the Education Act as proposed if the MUT called off its strike directive. But MUT president Marco Bonnici said this was an attempt to put the MUT with its back to the wall. The PM’s comments were made while a conciliatory meeting was being held between the MUT and the Ministry for Education. The MUT walked out of the meeting when it was informed about the PM’s words.
The Police are searching for a man who was allegedly involved in a heated argument with another man in a Żabbar apartment block. TVM is informed that at about 1.15pm Police were called to Trejqet il-Mitħna after being informed that a man, allegedly well-known to Police and of also having been involved in an attempted murder some years ago, was armed and was threatening another man. The Interdiocesan Environment Commission said that the proposed development near St Rita’s priory in Paceville which is owned and run by the Augustinian Order in Malta needs to be revised because it “is not compliant with the FAR policy and therefore not compliant with the Local Plan”. The proposal includes a four star, 12-storey accommodation, offices, a language school and underground office space, and another five storeys of underground parking to cater for 246 cars. Newsbook

The constitutional court has upheld a judgment ruling that the involvement of Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder investigation breached her family’s fundamental human rights. The court upheld the order for Valletta to desist from continuing to be part of the investigation but the court refuted the family’s request to revise all decisions taken as part of the investigation. AJD Tuna Ltd, one of the largest operators in the multi million euro fish ‘farming’ industry, has not filed its audited accounts since the company was established 18 years ago despite laws that state these should be provided annually. The company, owned by Charles Azzopardi of Azzopardi Fisheries, was established on 28 April, 2000.
