Giorgia Meloni Surpasses Renzi, Eyes Craxi and Berlusconi in Longevity Record

Giorgia Meloni’s government on Tuesday became the fourth longest-serving administration in the history of the Italian Republic, reaching 1,024 days in office since its inauguration on October 22, 2022.

This milestone means it has surpassed the duration of Matteo Renzi’s cabinet, which held the previous fourth-place record from February 22, 2014, to December 12, 2016.

The team led by Italy’s first female prime minister now aims to overtake the terms of Bettino Craxi’s first government (August 4, 1983 – August 1, 1986), Silvio Berlusconi’s fourth administration (May 8, 2008 – November 16, 2011), and Berlusconi’s second cabinet, which remains the record-holder at 1,412 days, from June 11, 2001, to April 23, 2005.

Meloni has made it clear that her ultimate objective is to preside over the only postwar Italian government to serve a full five-year term, ending in October 2027. If current projections hold, she will also surpass Berlusconi to become Italy’s longest-serving prime minister on September 4 next year.
