Global hunger declines, but rises in Africa and western Asia: UN report

About 8.2% of the world’s population—roughly 673 million people—experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5% in 2023, according to the UN’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 report. The drop is welcome but uneven, with hunger rising in much of Africa and western Asia.

Southern Asia and Latin America saw notable improvements, while over 20% of Africa’s population—307 million people—faced hunger in 2024. In western Asia, hunger affected 12.7% of the population.

High food prices and prolonged crises have slowed recovery. The UN projects 512 million people could still be undernourished by 2030—60% of them in Africa—posing a major challenge to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).
