GO plc has become the first Maltese telecoms operator to launch Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), commonly known as Wi-Fi Calling.
The technology, formally known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), follows the group’s rollout of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) last year. Together, the two services aim to strengthen connectivity in areas where mobile signals are weak, such as basements or buildings with thick walls. On compatible handsets, active calls can move seamlessly between Wi-Fi and 4G networks, reducing the risk of interruptions.
Unlike internet-based calling applications, Wi-Fi calling requires no additional software and is billed at standard mobile rates. Customers only need to enable the feature in their device settings.
“Technology should make life simpler and more connected,” said Nikhil Patil, Chief Executive Officer at GO plc. “With VoWiFi and VoLTE, we are removing the barriers that sometimes prevent a quick, clear conversation. This launch goes beyond network upgrades; it’s about ensuring everyone can reach who they need to, whenever they need to, with the devices they already own.”
Kelvin Camenzuli, Chief Digital Officer added, “our team worked extremely hard to make VoWiFi a native part of the customer experience. We introduced this service because calls should be clear, seamless and dependable. By combining VoWiFi with VoLTE, we are delivering quality and reliability without adding cost or complexity for our customers.”
At launch, Apple iPhones from the iPhone 7 onwards are compatible. GO expects broader support for Samsung and Google Pixel devices as manufacturers issue firmware updates. Roaming functionality is under consideration for future phases.
