Is another tragedy in the making in the Mediterranean Sea?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

While the controversies about the death of the 117 migrants who disappeared in the Mediterranean waters in front of the Libyan coast between Friday and Saturday still going on, another boat with 100 people on board was reported on Sunday morning by Alarm Phone, the volunteer call center that collects the distress calls of migrants, 60 miles off the coast of Misurata, in Libya.

The vessel, which initially had not asked for help, is seeping water and people in a panic.

On board there would be dead, and a child «unconscious or dead».

The warning system explains that “between 11:40 and 12:20” this morning, “people started to panic” because the boat was embarking on water. “They wanted us to inform the authorities, but not the Libyan ones,”

Alarm Phone continues. “At 12:58 we called the operational room in Rome, providing the new GPS position. They told us to call Malta.

At 13:10 we wrote emails in Rome, Malta and Libya asking who the coordination was. We requested urgent assistance. The emails to Tripoli came back immediately. Malta has confirmed to us that it will come towards us.

The situation, however, is not yet resolved: “Rome and Malta have instructed us to contact the Coast Guard of Tripoli as a competent authority” for the rescuers, writes on Twitter Alarm Phone. “So far we have not had any response from the Tripoli Coast Guard. We can not even confirm that they have received our message. We are calling all phone numbers, so far without success. ”
