Journalism is not about positive, upbeat news – UN Director General

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Journalism is not about positive, upbeat news. It is not about seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses. Rather, it’s about reporting solutions to start a debate on what can be done.

U,N. Under Secretary-General and Director General of the UN Office at Geneva Michael Møller said this in the inaugural speech of the 68th World Congress of the International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives and journalists at the United Nations in Geneva.

In his opening remarks, Møller underscored the challenges faced by free and independent media around the world.

“When journalists are targeted, societies as a whole pay a price”, he said, condemning attacks on the media.
