A Labour amendment, which called for MPs to express their support for the party’s Brexit plan, has been defeated.

Sky reports : “The significance of that defeat for Labour is that it moves the party closer to throwing its full weight behind a second referendum.
The party’s Brexit spokesman, Sir Keir Starmer, has said Labour would support another public vote if MPs rejected its alternative plan, which they now have done.”

The amendment, which reiterates commitments made by the prime minister to allow votes on no-deal and extending Article 50 if the Withdrawal Agreement is rejected on 12th March, has been approved.

The Independent reports that “MPs voted by 502 to 20 for a motion locking in the verbal promises given by the prime minister to allow votes on whether to leave the EU without a deal and delay Brexit if her agreed deal is rejected.”
The SNP amendment, which called for the government to immediately rule out a no-deal Brexit “under any and all circumstances”, has been defeated.

Conservative MP Alberto Costa’s amendment to seek a treaty on citizens’ rights after Brexit has been approved without a formal vote, given the fact that the government has already accepted the amendment.
