Libyan held after found holding 17,300 euros of undeclared cash by Customs while departing from Malta

Customs officials from the Anti Money Laundering team seized 7,300euros during routine operations at the airport departure lounge late yesterday evening.

The officials stopped the Libyan national as he was boarding the Istanbul bound flight. He was escorted to the Customs Departures office and following a personal and luggage search, approximately 17,300 euros, in several denominations and currencies, were elevated.

10,000euros were returned to the passenger and the rest seized by Customs pending investigation. The Police Anti Money laundering team was duly informed, who placed the passenger under arrest.

The passenger was arraigned in court and admitted the charges placed against him, forfeiting the seized cash as well as agreeing to pay a 4,325 euros fine.
