Malta has one of the highest rates of female prisoners in Europe, according to a new Council of Europe report, with nearly one in ten prisoners being a woman. This rate is nearly double the European average of five percent but is still lower than those in Andorra, Iceland, and Cyprus. The Council of Europe’s annual report, which reviews the state of prisons across the continent, reveals that just over a million people are currently incarcerated in Europe. Additionally, half of Malta’s prison population consists of foreign nationals. The report notes that Malta’s incarceration rate, with 107 inmates per 100,000 residents, aligns with the average rate across Europe, totaling approximately 581 prisoners. (Times of Malta)
TM defends geo-fencing of ride-hailing services
Transport Malta has defended its decision to introduce a Geofencing system, saying it is already legislated. “It is intended at improving traffic flow and safety. In collaboration with the main ride hailing platforms such as Bolt, eCabs, and Uber, Transport Malta (TM) is facilitating with geofencing technology to manage operations in the area,” the transport authority said. Earlier, Bolt had said that the introduction of a measure forbidding Y-plate-cabs from waiting for bookings within 100 metres of white taxi stands and 15 metres from bus stops could “kill the industry”. Man gets 4-year sentence for sexual offences on niece
A man was sentenced to 4 years in prison after being found guilty of committing sexual acts with his niece. The man was accused of committing sexual acts on August 8, 2019, and in the weeks and months before. The girl was between 4 and 5 years old when the abuse took place. (TVM)
