‘Vast Majority’ of Construction Contractors Have Applied for Operating Licenses, PM Says
The vast majority of contractors in the construction sector have submitted applications to operate under a license, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced during a pre-Budget consultation meeting with the Malta Developers Association (MDA). A government statement highlighted Abela’s satisfaction with this progress, emphasising it as a testament to “the government’s success in implementing reforms, particularly in the construction sector.” In his remarks before continuing the consultation and listening to the MDA’s proposals, Abela noted that the sector is confronting new challenges and demands, many of which have emerged due to the country’s recent economic achievements. He affirmed that the government’s aim remains sustained economic success, but with a focus on smarter growth that enhances quality of life while addressing the evolving needs of the nation. Commercial centre planned on site earmarked for new Gozo Court Plans have been revealed for the development of a new commercial centre and underground car park on a site in Victoria, Gozo, which had previously been considered for the relocation of the island’s law courts. The Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) has submitted a planning application for the redevelopment of Pjazza l-Assedju ta’ Ghawdex, aiming to significantly transform the existing car park. This decision marks a setback in the ongoing efforts to secure new premises for Gozo’s law courts, which continue to face issues with health and safety, maintenance, and accessibility. These challenges have led to multiple strikes by lawyers practising at the Gozo courthouse in recent years. According to the GRDA, the primary goal of the proposed project is to address the shortage of parking and open spaces in Victoria. (Newsbook)
SPB residents to take to protest beach development
Residents of St. Paul’s Bay will protest this Sunday against ongoing developments at Bugibba Perched Beach, raising concerns about the growing privatisation of public spaces. “This is not the ‘balance’ the government promised. The beach is public and should remain so,” the residents said in a joint statement. The protest, organised by ADPD Chairperson and St. Paul’s Bay councillor Sandra Gauci, will take place at 5pm and will include support from Moviment Graffitti and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA). The demonstration aims to address the shrinking public beach space, with private developments now occupying two-thirds of the area. (Maltatoday)
