GWU issues directive in schools as cleaners claim
Workers employed in schools serviced by the contractor General Cleaners have been instructed to refrain from carrying out essential cleaning tasks until they receive their wages. The General Workers Union (GWU) issued this directive, highlighting that the issue has persisted since January. According to a statement by the GWU, the contractor initially began failing to pay employees on time or provide them with pay slips. Efforts were made in February to address the situation through discussions involving the contractor, the Department of Education, and the GWU. However, the situation deteriorated as more workers reported not receiving their wages. In response, the hospitality and food section of the GWU initiated industrial action and instructed cleaners working in schools to withhold essential cleaning services until they are compensated. Significant gap between support businesses say they give VOs and everyday reality – report
A recent report by the Academy of Givers reveals a disconnect between businesses’ perceived and actual support for voluntary organisations (VOs). While many VOs prefer long-term support for sustainability, businesses tend to offer one-off contributions or short-term partnerships. The report, based on input from 129 businesses and 57 VOs, highlights the need for businesses to align support with organisational values and pursue systemic change. It also underscores a lack of understanding between businesses and VOs, with VOs feeling undervalued and misunderstood. Bridging this gap requires a shift in mindset and better communication between both parties. (Newsbook)
