Government debt tops EUR 10 billion

At the end of May 2024, Central Government debt stood at €10,017.9 million, an increase of €934.2 million when compared to 2023, fresh NSO data reveals. In the first five months of the year, he interest component of the public debt servicing costs totalled €103.0 million, an increase of €20.1 million when compared to the previous year. Over the same period, the difference between total revenue and expenditure resulted in a deficit of €7.1 million being reported in the Government’s Consolidated Fund at the end of May 2024, whereas a year earlier a deficit of €103.5 million was registered, the NSO said. Joseph Muscat to continue as MPL chair

Joseph Muscat will continue in his role as chairman of the Malta Premier League, as the country’s top-flight clubs have expressed their support for him despite serious criminal charges. The former PM’s position has been scrutinised after he was was charged with money laundering, bribery, and corruption related to the Vitals hospitals deal. At an event announcing a new sponsorship for the Premier League, Muscat revealed that he had asked the 12 clubs if they believed he should step down from his role. “The clubs feel that since there has been no specific decision on any of the procedures that I am facing, they see no reason why I should not continue with my job”, he said. (Times of Malta)

New legislation for pet groomers and sitters

New legislation regulating pet groomers, sitters and boarders was announced by government. The new rules set minimum standards on previously unregulated areas within the sector, while introducing registration and compliance measures, and will come into force in two months’ time. The new legislation was announced by Animal Rights Minister Anton Refalo, and Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said. The new legislation will introduce the registration of pet sitting accommodations while retaining the licensing of pet boarding establishments. (Maltatoday)
