Special Dispatch – Malta’s Official Position and Calls for International Law
The Maltese government has emphasized the importance of international law. This emphasis comes after the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces. In its initial official response, a government spokesperson emphasized Malta’s commitment to promoting de-escalation. They highlighted stability and a peaceful, democratic resolution to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. The spokesperson highlighted Malta’s diplomatic approach. They stated that Malta remains in close and regular communication with its European Union partners. This communication is to closely monitor the evolving situation.
Nationalist Party’s Appeal for a Democratic Transition
Concurrently, the Nationalist Party urged that any transition of power in Venezuela should be democratic. They emphasized it must be peaceful following the controversial US capture of President Maduro. A spokesperson for the party clarified Malta’s position. Consistent with the stance of the European Union, Malta has never recognised Nicolás Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. The spokesperson reaffirmed the party’s longstanding support for democratic values. They also supported the principle that every nation has the right to self-governance through democratic means. Emphasising the aspirations of the Venezuelan people, the spokesperson insisted that any transition must fully respect human rights, international law, and ensure accountability.
Statements from Maltese and European Figures
Further expressing concern, Nationalist Party MEP David Casa condemned the US actions in Venezuela. He argued that unilateral military interventions violate fundamental principles of sovereignty. The forced removal of a head of state also constitutes a clear violation.
Former EU Commissioner Helena Dalli drew a parallel between the crisis in Venezuela and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She argued that both situations exemplify the international community’s failure to learn lessons from history. She stated that oppression of a people is never justifiable. The developments in Venezuela have exceeded all acceptable boundaries. Events in Ukraine have also surpassed these limits.
Labour MP Edward Zammit Lewis stated that former US President Donald Trump’s actions pose a dangerous risk. This precedent affects smaller, sovereign, and defenceless nations such as Malta. He emphasized that the coming hours would be crucial in determining Venezuela’s potential for a peaceful outcome. Stability and democracy in Venezuela depend on these hours. He stressed that the right to self-determination must be upheld. It should not be dictated by external forces.
