A 21-year-old Spaniard, Jon Vila Jauregui, was jailed for nine months on Wednesday after going on a drunken rampage in Paceville, damaging cars and injuring a police officer. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 16, when Jauregui damaged five parked cars and slightly injured a police sergeant while violently resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty to the charges, which included wilful damage, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and public intoxication. Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech took into account his early guilty plea and cooperation when delivering the sentence. (Times of Malta)

Appeals court confirms conviction of former prison director

The conviction of former prison director Robert Brincau for a 2022 gun incident at Għadira has been upheld on appeal. Brincau was found guilty of threatening a man with a handgun and slightly injuring him during a beach altercation in August 2022. He received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for three years. Following the ruling on Tuesday, Brincau resigned from his position, and the Home Affairs Ministry promptly appointed Christopher Siegersma as his successor. Brincau had initially filed an appeal against the conviction. (The Malta Independent)

PN says Home Affairs Ministers absent despite serious allegations

The Opposition has taken Security and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri to task, accusing him of being absent throughout the summer despite serious allegations against LESA and Identità agencies. During a press conference, the PN said that Minister Camilleri only appeared for two interviews after those involved in the police attack in Ħamrun were charged, but failed to provide any solutions. While condemning the events in Ħamrun, the PN representatives said it was unacceptable for the minister to resurface with what they claimed were pre-prepared responses, without addressing key concerns regarding the agencies’ operations. Dr Carabott highlighted allegations involving Identità, where documents were reportedly registered using third-party addresses. (Maltatoday)
