President says judiciary must be allowed to work in calm environment

The President has cautioned that the courts and judiciary must operate in a calm environment to carry out their duties effectively. This statement marked Myriam Spiteri Debono’s first official communication following a magisterial inquiry into the Vitals hospitals deal, which led to criminal charges against prominent political figures. She insisted on the need for careful selection of words and advised against letting emotions dictate decisions. According to her, exercising prudence is crucial, allowing situations to unfold over time. She also highlighted that our legal system offers remedies for those who feel wronged or deprived of their rights. “The present situations essentially require that all institutions, but particularly the courts and the judiciary, can exercise their functions in a serene atmosphere,” she said.

Fearne says he has not been informed of charge, points fingers at Konrad Mizzi

Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne insisted that he has not been officially informed about his upcoming court appearance, where he is anticipated to face charges related to defrauding the government and misappropriating funds. Fearne stated that he has not been provided with the process verbal from the inquiry and is unaware of his involvement in it, thus refraining from commenting due to lack of information. He asserted his commitment to fulfilling his duties with integrity and that he has always abided by the law. Fearne also pointed out that the National Audit Office’s report revealed that Konrad Mizzi, who was not the health minister, had engaged in side agreements with Steward Health Care after 2018 without Fearne’s knowledge.
