Today’s Editors share their views on the current crisis, repeat appeals for collaboration and stronger economic support.
The Times of Malta looks again at the economic impact of the current crisis, noting that the UK and the United States have adopted massive economic packages aimed at reducing the negative impact on their businesses as well as on the job market. The Editor argues that Malta’s initial response was too feeble and needs to be ramped up immediately.
The Independent welcomes the closure of non-essential retail outlets and services, arguing that this will limit social interaction on hopefully limit the spread of the virus. It also calls on those who have to continue working to limit interactions as much as possible and not to report to work if feeling sick – if this is not done, containment will be impossible.
L-Orizzont ties in with a similar appeal, calling for people to stay inside unless they really need too. It also calls for responsibility amongst the business community, particularly in the foodstuff sector. The editor rightly describes as unacceptable any profiteering taking place at this delicate time. The Editor calls for solidarity in this tough moment.
In-Nazzjon seems to auspicate further restrictive measures, referring to calls for a complete lockdown. The editor expresses concern that the virus will continue to spread as workers conglomerate together and therefore calls for such decision to be taken before it is too late.
