Man shot dead by French police after stabbings at Marseille hotel

A man was shot dead by police in Marseille after stabbing five people on Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the attacker, a Tunisian national legally residing in France, had been evicted from a hotel for unpaid rent before returning armed with knives and a baton. He stabbed three people there, including the manager and his son, before attacking others near a kebab shop close to the Old Port.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire as police confronted the man with a taser and firearms. One victim remains in critical condition and two others are seriously injured.

Mayor Benoît Payan praised police for their swift action, while Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was expected to visit the scene.
