May survives vote of no confidence

Theresa May has survived Jeremy Corbyn’s bid to topple her government after a motion of no confidence failed to win a majority of MPs’ backing.

Votes in favour: 306

Votes against: 325

In a point of order May said she is pleased the House has “expressed its confidence” in the government, I do not take this responsibility lightly.

The PM says she will continue to work on the solemn promise made to the people of this country and leave the European Union.

May said she has proposed meetings with senior parliamentarians, including leaders of opposition parties, starting tonight on the best way forward on Brexit.

This means Jeremy Corbyn has failed to force a general election after rebel Tories and Democratic Unionist MPs backed Theresa May’s government in a vote of confidence just a day after rejecting her Brexit deal.
