Pope urges mothers to breastfeed during mass if necessary

Reading Time: < 1 minute

On the occasion of the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, the Holy Father addressed the parents of the children present: “They are not used to being at the Sistine, let them cry and if they are hungry, breastfeed them here too”

The words were uttered during the homily of the celebration for the feast of the baptism of the Lord. On this occasion, the Holy Father celebrated mass with the baptism of a group of children aged between a few months and a year.

Addressing the parents of the little children present, Pope Francis then added: “Children are not used to being in the Sistine area, to being closed in this slightly warm environment, to being dressed like this. So – added the Pope – they will feel uncomfortable, but do not be frightened. In fact, let them cry, and if they are hungry, breastfeed them. Yes, here at the Sistine Chapel. ”

On the sacrament of baptism, the Pope then explained: “Baptizing a child is an act of justice towards him”. And he reminded his parents: “You are right to have them baptized as children, because in baptizing them we give them a sign, the sign of the Holy Spirit who will defend and help them throughout their lives”. By baptizing the children we make them “grow with the Holy Spirit, with his strength and his light”, said Pope Francis.
