Situation between the MUT and the Government remains locked, AI and new technologies take centre stage at Delta Summit, GWU’s anniversary’s conference and news from the court are amongst the salient items covered by Malta’s leading news portals for today.

  • The MUT on Thursday morning rejected a meeting with the Ministry, saying that its position on the Act as proposed is clear and that it intends to move ahead with its strike plans. The minister said his door is still open for discussion. The Malta Independent  Meanwhile, the Minister for Education who was expected at the Junior College, did not turn up for visit. Net News 

  • The Prime Minister said that after having introduced a comprehensive legal framework regulating digital ledger technologies, it was only natural for Malta to turn its attention to Artificial Intelligence. Muscat was addressing attendees at the Delta Summit where he focused on blockchain and its uses and said it was only natural for Malta to turn its attention to AI, as that too would soon come to play a major role in people’s daily lives.  Malta Today 

  • A new migrant rescue vessel, flying an Italian flag, is on its way to the search-and-rescue area off Libya, providing a lifeline to asylum seekers fleeing north Africa. The Mare Jonio, run by the Italian civil society project Mediterranea, in cooperation with Sea-Watch, is accompanied by another vessel – the Spanish Proactiva Open Arms’ Astral. It will reach the search and rescue zone on Saturday. Times of Malta 

  • The two men accused in the Eleanor Mangion Walker murder case have been charged with committing a number of thefts while on bail. Andrew Mangion and Kristijan Zekic -who also goes by the name of Adamjohn  Niyazov – had been on bail for the murder and concealing of the body, respectively, of Mangion Walker. The Malta Independent 

  • Foreign workers have become a political battleground and this was evident on Thursday when Joseph Muscat and Adrian Delia addressed General Workers’ Union delegates. While the Prime Minister said, foreign workers were needed to fulfil jobs created by a growing economy, the Opposition leader lamented the dependence on foreign labour. Both leaders were addressing the GWU’s extraordinary congress being held between today and tomorrow. The congress, coinciding with the union’s 75th anniversary, has the theme, The Future is Now. MaltaToday

  • The GWU’s Secretary General Josef Bugeja, announced that a discussion is to start in Malta, so that every worker, irrespective of the nationality, will be a member of trade union. Bugeja was talking during the conference organised by the GWU. iNews

  • Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was non-committal as to whether or not the government would support a Nationalist Party motion to rescind the Gieh ir-Repubblika awarded to Tony Zarb, simply telling The Malta Independent that it is not the language he would use or support. Illum

  • A new entity has been established with the aim of managing waste. The entity, which will be headed by Mr Marc Muscat,  One

  • A total of 64 people have been stung by a travel agency scam so far, with hopes fading that they might find some legal remedy. They have all filed complaints to the Malta Consumer and Competition Authority, but there may be others who have not yet come forward. Times of Malta 

  • A 74 year old man, Michael Charles Muscat was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of abusing from a 10 year-old boy, who was trusted in his care. One News /  TVM

  • The aide of the Economy Minister Chris Cardona, followed in his boss’ footsteps and proceeded to drop the libel cases he had filed against the slain investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and the Nationalist Party media journalist Mario Frendo. Newsbook
