Trump announces US will increase sanctions against Iran

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is hitting Iran with new economic sanctions over an attack on Saudi Arabia oil facilities.

The president tweeted: “I have just instructed the Secretary of the Treasury to substantially increase Sanctions on the country of Iran!”

He did not specify what those sanctions would be.

Trump made the announcement as his administration considers a variety of responses, both economic and military, to what it calls Iran’s involvement in last weekend’s attack on a Saudi oil production.

Iran denies the attack, and accuses the United States of warmongering.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to be in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to speak with leaders there about potential responses to the oil facility attack.

Pompeo has blamed Iran for Saturday’s strikes on the Abqaiq oil processing plant and a key Saudi oil field, where an estimated 5.7 million barrels of oil are produced each day. The attacks, which disrupted more than 5% of the world’s daily supply, have renewed fears of a military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran.
