US President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iran in Islamabad ended without agreement, sharply escalating tensions.
The move targets vessels suspected of paying tolls to Iran, with Trump warning they would not be granted safe passage. Washington signalled it is prepared to take further action, maintaining that Iran’s nuclear ambitions remain the central concern.
Despite 21 hours of negotiations, both sides left the talks without a deal, each blaming the other. Vice President JD Vance said Iran had failed to meet clear US conditions, insisting Washington’s “final” offer remains on the table. Iran, meanwhile, pointed to partial progress but acknowledged key disagreements, including issues tied to the Strait and wider regional dynamics.
Pakistan urged restraint as diplomatic efforts faltered, warning that further escalation could destabilise the region, with a fragile ceasefire now hanging in the balance.
