Ukraine says it killed senior Russian general who died in scooter blast in Moscow

Ukraine was responsible for the killing of Lt Gen Igor Kirillov in Moscow, a Ukrainian security source has claimed, according to reports by Reuters and AFP.

Kirillov, head of the Russian military’s chemical, biological, and radiological weapons unit, died on Tuesday when an explosive device attached to a scooter detonated outside an apartment building in south-eastern Moscow. The blast also killed his deputy as they exited the building early in the morning.

Kirillov, who was sanctioned by Britain in October over the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, is the most senior Russian military figure to be killed in such an attack in Moscow since the Kremlin launched its offensive nearly three years ago.

The Kommersant daily described the incident as “an unprecedented crime committed in Moscow.”
