Dr Mark Chetcuti sworn in as Chief Justice

Dr Mark Chetcuti was this morning sworn in as Malta’s Chief Justice during a ceremony at San Anton Palace in the presence of the President of the Republic, Dr George Vella.

Dr Chetucti’s appointment has been approved unanimously in Parliament.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis also attended the ceremony which was restricted in view of current pandemic directives.

In his address, President Vella welcomed the fact that Dr Chetcuti was appointed through a bipartisan agreement in Parliament. He attributed this achievement as a result of political maturity that has resulted from discussions taking place at the Constitutional Reform Commission, triggered by the recommendations of the Venice Commission as well as by civil society.

In a statement, Government re-iterated its appreciation towards outgoing Chief Justice Dr Joseph Azzopardi and wished Dr Chetcuti success in in his contribution towards the judiciary.
