Iratxe Garcia Perez elected as President of the European Group of Socialists and Democrats

The Spanish MEP Iratxe García Pérez has been elected on 18 June as president of the Group of the Socialists and Democrats in the Parliament, the second biggest Group with 153 seats.

“Europe must regain its social soul and place people and the fight against inequalities at the heart of its political action, based on social standards that take us forward.”, she said during her inaugural speech.

Meanwhile Labour Party MEP and Head of Delegation Miriam Dalli has been chosen to be one of the Vice Presidents of the European Group of Socialists and Democrats.

She received 101 votes from 130.

Dalli said that she is honoured that her colleagues in S&D put their trust in her to work for progressive and social politics. “I will work to strengthen the success we have achieved together and also change the challenges we have ahead of us into opportunities,” she said.
