Capsized Fishing Boat Update – ‘Rogue wave’ capsized Sicilian boat

The Malta Independent reports that a a relative of one of the dead men told Italian media that it was a rogue wave that flipped the Sicilian fishing vessel and threw the four men into the water off Marsascala.

Net TV reports that the victims have been identified Luciano Sapienza, from Sicily, and Toumi Zakaria, aged 29, though his nationality is unclear with Maltese police giving it as Moroccan and Italian media as Tunisian.

The two men died and another two were hospitalized after their fishing boat capsized off Żonqor Point during the night between Friday and Saturday. Zakaria’s body was found immediately but the body of Luciano Sapienza was only found Saturday afternoon in the limits of Pembroke following an intense search by the Armed Forces of Malta.

The boat, named Zaira, was registered in Syracuse and left Sicily last Wednesday.
