Macron Calls for Unity in Letter to French People

Three days after France’s snap parliamentary elections failed to produce an absolute majority, President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation in a letter published on the media.

With the left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire alliance securing the largest number of MPs, Macron’s supporters are split between allying with the right-wing Les Républicains (LR) and forming a broad coalition with social democrats.

In his letter, published in Le Parisien, Macron states, “No one has won. No political force has obtained a sufficient majority on its own.” He urges all political forces committed to republican institutions, the rule of law, parliamentarianism, a European orientation, and the defense of French independence to engage in sincere dialogue to build a solid, plural majority for the country.
