Putin would breach Ukraine deal if it is not defended, says PM

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would violate a peace deal with Ukraine if it is not properly enforced. His remarks came after attending a meeting of senior military leaders in London.

Speaking at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, London, where representatives from over 20 countries convened to discuss security proposals for Ukraine, Sir Keir stressed that any agreement to end the conflict must be backed by security measures to ensure its durability.

He emphasised that such arrangements would send a clear message to Russia that breaching a deal would have “severe consequences.”

The prime minister stated that the UK and its allies were transitioning from “political momentum” to “military planning,” a process he said must begin before any agreement is reached.

“It is crucial that we undertake this work because history has shown that a deal without enforcement is one that Putin will break,” he said. “We have seen it happen before, and I have no doubt it would happen again.”
